I have struggled with the disease of obesity as far back as I can remember. My weight has been a constant yo-yo effect. I remember being teased all through elementary, middle and high school. This leads to very low self-esteem and eventually into marriage of abuse. My back was broken in 2 places. This marriage continued to create even lower self-esteem and depression.
As we all know, with lower self esteem and depression comes even more comfort food and weight gain. Only 15% of people who live in domestic violence ever get out of the relationship alive. I was one of those survivors only because of God's abundant grace. Now very happily married to Ken (last name omitted) with a blended family of 4 children, I have begun to work on myself. One year ago, I suffered with arthritis, colon trouble, high blood pressure, terrible knees and feet, and numerous other medical conditions.
It was in August 2002 that my family doctor and I began to discuss weight loss surgery. I began researching this procedure and the doctors. Dr. Champion's name was repeatedly given to me. In December 2002 my surgery was scheduled for April 3, 2003. This was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. I wish that I had done this much sooner. I had to reach the point of being sick and tired of being sick and tired. I am no longer on medications and what a difference this surgery has made on my life. I have lost 134 pounds and have gone from a size 24 to a 6 as of today.
I recently selected to compete for Mrs. Georgia International.This pageant will be April 25, 2004 at 6 pm in the Holiday Inn Ballroom on Holcombe Bridge Road. I would love for each and every one of you to come and support me. This opportunity will allow me to share my journey from helplessness to hopefulness with others, who are battered, broken and share with me the disease of obesity.
