Find the body of your dreams three hours south of Greenville.
Contemplating weight loss surgery? Greenville patients are packing for their one-week, medical vacation in Atlanta with board certified bariatric surgeon, Dr. J.K. Champion, Director of the Videoscopic Institute. Located off I-75 in Marietta (northwest Atlanta), the Videoscopic Institute is a Center of Excellence solely dedicated to weight loss surgery. Greenville patients benefit from:
- Dr. J.K. Champion’s thirteen years of experience and completion of over 2600 laparoscopic weight loss surgeries.
- State-of-the-art bariatric surgical options, including LAP band and gastric bypass surgery.
- Exceptional patient care from the healthcare staff of the Videoscopic Institute, named a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS).
- Outstanding patient care at Northside Hospital, voted for ten years as Atlanta’s Most Preferred Hospital for Overall Healthcare Services.
A professional team devoted to your weight-loss surgery needs
Motivated by the absence of standards in the bariatric industry, Dr. Champion teamed with the ASBS to establish the Centers of Excellence designation. This assures those seeking healthcare that an establishment conducting weight loss operations has experienced and trained staff, appropriate equipment and an education program for severely overweight patients as determined by the ASBS.
Dr. Champion’s exacting standards are present in the Videoscopic Institute’s operations and commitment to patient care. The Videoscopic Institute provides routine in-office bone scans, dietary counseling, lab monitoring for vitamin and nutritional deficiencies, educational materials and programs, support groups and free lifetime aftercare.
Dr. Champion is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, board certified by The American Board of Surgery, an active member of several professional associations and a nationally-recognized expert in videoscopic general and thoracic surgery. Dr. Champion is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Mercer University and former Director of Endosurgical Education at Emory University School of Medicine.
Weight-loss surgical options
You are a potential candidate for bariatric surgery if you are 100 pounds or more over your normal weight, have a body mass index (BMI) that is 40 or above or have a 35-39 BMI with an established related health problem.
We perform the most up-to-date procedures, including: Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (Lap Band), REALIZE band and Gastric Sleeve. Dr. Champion will review the best procedure for you during your pre-operative meeting.
Insurance and financing
We accept insurance and cash; will arrange financing; and help you to obtain insurance authorization or out-of-network insurance benefits, if any. You are responsible for all travel and lodging expenses as well as insurance co-payments and deductibles. Please pay all fees before the day of surgery.

Planning for your surgery
When scheduling your bariatric surgery, Greenville patients should prepare to spend one week in Atlanta. On Monday before your day of surgery, our bariatric nurse will explain the pre-operative process to you. Next, you will meet with Dr. Champion. Then, you will go to Northside Hospital for pre-op testing (i.e., anesthesiology, lab work, radiology and EKG).
Most surgeries occur on Tuesday or Wednesday, however, based on the schedule, this is subject to change. Gastric bypass patients generally remain in the hospital for 48 hours while LAP band patients typically stay 23 hours. However, exact hospitalization time may vary.
After surgery, patients should move frequently, but slowly, to foster sufficient blood circulation and stay well-hydrated. Following gastric bypass or LAP band surgery, Greenville patients should avoid travel for 72 hours. Then, while traveling, take hourly breaks for short walks and hydration.
Our staff will gladly arrange travel plans and answer any questions about your surgery. Contact us at (770) 425-5525 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
