The advantage of the laparoscopic adjustable band is that the band can be adjusted after surgery. We are able to either tighten or loosen the band depending on the patient’s requirements, which is a huge advantage in helping them to lose weight. Disadvantage of the Lap-Band is that while it is a safer procedure, the weight loss is not as great and there is a higher incidence of failure after the surgery. It is really what we call a 50-50 operation. People typically lose about 50% of their excess weight and about 50% of the patients succeed with the operation long term. The Laparoscopic Adjustable Band is dependent on the patients absolutely following all the guidelines. In other words, they cannot snack between meals, cannot eat sweets and they have to exercise if they want to succeed.
