Introduction to Bariatric Surgery

Severe obesity is a complex, medical disease that affects more than four million people in the United States, and in here in the state of Georgia. It is not a moral problem due to a lack of will power. Studies have shown that diets, medications, behavioral modification or exercise programs have a 95% failure rate in this population, due to underlying physiologic, chemical and genetic factors.

Severely obese patients have a very high risk of associated health problems and early death; therefore, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has endorsed these two procedures, both forms of bariatric surgery, as effective in the treatment of obesity. Lap-Band, REALIZE Band, Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG), Gastric Sleeve & Roux en-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY).

Either of these operations, depending on the circumstances, can be accomplished by an open or laparoscopic technique. We have been successful in performing the laparoscopic technique on patients weighing up to 550+ pounds.

Surgery is designed as an aid in dieting to assist individuals with altering their eating habits by restricting food intake or limiting absorption of ingested food.

Videoscopic surgery is an advanced surgical technique that utilizes a video camera to perform operations through very small incisions. The operations are performed by making small incisions(usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch) and gently separating the patient’s muscles to enter the abdomen or chest without cutting.

Laparoscopic surgery approach is performed through several small incisions with the aid of a fiberoptic video camera and special instruments that can reduce the trauma and discomfort associated with a long, open incision.
